Who it's for

Ukrainian for beginners, heritage speakers and everyone in between.

Lessons start wherever you are — your first Cyrillic letter or your fiftieth conversation.

I

Complete beginners

We start with the alphabet and the sounds, and use real phrases from the first lesson — so you're reading and speaking, not memorising lists.

II

Heritage speakers

You understand your grandparents but freeze when it's your turn to answer? We turn passive Ukrainian into confident speech and fill in the grammar and spelling you never learned formally.

III

Moving, working, loving

Relocating to Ukraine, working with Ukrainian colleagues or getting to know your partner's family — we focus on the situations you'll really be in.

IV

State language exam

Preparing for the Ukrainian state language proficiency exam? We work through the format, practise each type of task and close the gaps in grammar.

Inside the lessons

What we work on.

  1. 01Ukrainian conversation practice in every lesson, not just exercises
  2. 02Grammar explained with real examples: cases, verb aspects, endings
  3. 03Reading and writing in Cyrillic, step by step
  4. 04Pronunciation: the sounds English doesn't have, like и, ї and the soft sign
  5. 05Vocabulary for your life — work, family, travel, hobbies
  6. 06Notes and new words after every lesson
  7. 07How people really talk, not only textbook phrases
  8. 08The differences from Russian, if you already know some

Student reviews

What Ukrainian students say.

I've been taking weekly Ukrainian conversation practice lessons with Alina for several months now and have seen a real improvement in my conversation skills. She clearly takes an interest in her students and is excellent at guiding a conversation to help a student produce output and be creative with the language. Highly recommend!

Alina is very patient and encouraging, and quite flexible in adapting material to the lessons as we go along, and in sensing what would be good exercises for the next lesson. (We are focusing on the cases, several lessons for each case.)
Ralph16 Ukrainian Lessons
I loved my lesson with Alina because as a beginner into a language that I know nothing about I feel like the challenge of learning Ukrainian is a lot more achievable now!

Good questions

Questions about Ukrainian lessons.

  1. How hard is Ukrainian for English speakers?

It takes steady work, but it's very learnable. Cyrillic usually takes a few lessons, and pronunciation is consistent — words are read the way they're written. The seven cases take the longest, so we introduce them gradually through phrases you actually use.

  2. Do I need to know the alphabet before the first lesson?

No. We learn Cyrillic together through real words, so you're reading short phrases within the first few lessons.

  3. I understand Ukrainian but can't speak it. Can you help?

Yes — this is very common among heritage speakers. We focus on speaking, add the grammar and spelling you missed, and gently correct the habits picked up at home, so you feel at ease with family and in Ukraine.

  4. Can you help me prepare for the Ukrainian state language exam?

Yes. We go through the exam format and practise the kinds of tasks it includes, along with the grammar and vocabulary they require. Tell me your exam date and level in the trial lesson and I'll suggest a plan.

  5. How often should I have lessons?

Once or twice a week works well for most people. Regularity matters more than long sessions — the five-lesson pack is an easy way to keep a steady rhythm.
